Big Splash

In 1997 the Kind World Foundation of the Siouxland Community Foundation provided a grant to pilot the "Big Splash" program, a program that enhances the quality of the special need students' physical education experience by providing swimming instruction and movement exploration two days a week during the school year.

As of January 2010, Big Splash served 163 students per month, including children with autism, mental disabilities, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy and behavior disorders. These students have experienced a dramatic improvement in their overall health, and have greatly increased their inclusion in classroom participation. In fact, each classroom teacher has asked if their students could swim every day because it would double their academic performance.

The program has sent more than 30 children
to swim in the Special Olympics!

In 2007, the Sioux City Community School District received a grant  to provide swimming instruction to special needs students.  With just seven students, the “Big Splash” program was piloted in January 2007.  Siouxland Aquatics facilitates the not-for-profit  program which enhances the quality of the special needs students’ physical education experience by providing beginning through advanced swimming instruction and aquatic movement exploration.  Through generous contributions, the "Big Splash" program has grown to serve over 455 students during the 2009-2010 school year.

Contributions of any amount are welcome and appreciated.

Should you wish to specifically grant a scholarship to a deserving student, the cost of a scholarship for one student is $675 for the school year. The cost of a scholarship for five students is $3,375 for the school year.
